Solstice means "to stand still." The word combines the Latin words sol for "Sun" and sistere for "to stand still". Winter Solstice is the day the sun appears to be at its lowest point in the sky for the year. The day symbolizes the greatest darkness and a celebration of the rebirth and return of the light.
